Become a Temporary Summer Volunteer at the Wakefield Historical Society!

Have you ever wanted to learn about the inner workings of a museum's operations, how to give memorable tours, or learn more about Wakefield's history? Have you ever wanted to learn how to digitize items, build displays, and learn how to use modern museum archival methods and technology? You're in the right place!

The Wakefield Historical Society & Museum will be opening up summer applications for student volunteers. Volunteer opportunities will be any day(s), Monday through Saturday, any time(s) from 1 PM to 4 PM. Volunteers may begin volunteering at any time and stop at any time. These positions will be terminated on August 15th, 2026, in preparation for the upcoming school year.

BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING:

Learn about the ins and outs of a local museum, mixing the charm of a small-town museum while utilizing modern museum digitization programs and processes. Learn more about Wakefield’s history while building your volunteer hours for your college applications and resumes. Going into a history or archival field? Learn more about basic processes in these fields! Build lifelong people and teamwork skills both in-person and online by helping give tours and responding to questions and research inquiries.

DISCLAIMERS:

This volunteer position is an unpaid position. Volunteers should not expect to receive any form of compensation, neither monetary nor tangible item, for their volunteer work. The Wakefield Historical Society will only be able to supply documentation of the volunteered time as well as recorded volunteer hours worked for your records. Temporary volunteers will not receive their own keys to the building and will only be permitted to work in the building when the Director or a Docent is present. Temporary volunteers are under no obligation to continue volunteering and may cease volunteering at any time, at their own discretion. Temporary volunteers are considered “at will” and may be relieved of their duties, if necessary, as decided by the Director and Board of Trustees.

HOW TO APPLY:

  1. Review the following documents: Youth Volunteer Program and HS Volunteer Application Form.

  2. Complete the HS Volunteer Application Form by either…

    a. Printing the document and filling it out by hand, then scanning it/taking photos of it and emailing it to Alex Gustafson, director@wakefieldmihistoricalsociety.org.

    b. Run the document through Adobe Acrobat PDF Editor to type/write freely on the document, then send the completed PDF to Alex Gustafson, director@wakefieldmihistoricalsociety.org.

  3. Ensure the Parent/Guardian permission form is complete. Applications missing this signature will not be considered.

  4. That’s all! Accepted applications will be reached out to and followed by a short meeting at the museum. Following this meeting, temporary volunteers will be invited to the next monthly Board of Trustees meeting to introduce themselves and receive their name tags.
